WIAW~Without the ABC’s

Welcome to a regular plain old What I Ate Wednesday with no letters attached, just food.  Let’s see how I do without an Alphabet to support me.  Of course, all the fun is still directed and supported by the lovely Jenn at Peas & Crayons. When you’re finished here, be sure to visit P & C to get some great food ideas and leave some comments.  Let the fun begin!

Peas and Crayons

I like to be more orderly when I’m sharing my Food Fun with all of you, but as I look at my photos, not much excitement to be had.

There’s a breakfast…

Key lime pie yogurt (only 39 cents at Aldi!) very tasty.  My first time trying this flavor.  Yum.  Wish they had more flavors there.  Of course its little friend, the bowl of Fiber One (actually Aldi brand too) always tags along.  Very tasty and filling and can also do double duty as a quick lunch.  Actually…it’s good Any Time!

The last of my 2 months of free Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee.  I’m sad 😦  but I just got some more coupons.  2 coupons for 99 cents, but Free is still better! Hey, it’s Dunkin’ Donuts coffee.  Better get it while I can…I’ve never seen Dunkin’ in New Mexico!

I love a lunch that starts out as a quick pick up at the WaWa…

Veggie and dip pack from WaWa and cottage cheese from home (also Aldi-it’s everywhere!)

It became a very satisfying lunch…it really held me for quite a while.

Two dinners for you.  After my slashed finger last week, I hadn’t been doing a lot of chopping, not wanting to get my war wound wet.  I ate a lot of veggie burgers on buns.

So happy to have a salad again.  This one with home-made dressing again.  I’m not even sure what I put into this one.  Need to perfect that and start writing down what I use!  Added to it were 2 Morningstar Farms Garden Veggie Patties.   Such a great addition to a salad.  10 grams of protein each and only 3 Points each on Weight Watchers.  All tossed together in the Big Purple Bowl, Of Course!

A Wonderful veggie combo…onion, garlic, yellow bell pepper, zucchini, Portobello mushroom, tomatoes and broccoli.  Various spices (gotta remember to write those down!)  Very tasty.  It’s so good to get back to fresh veggies.  That reminds me…I think there needs to be a trip to the produce market planned into my day today.

That’s this week’s What I Ate Wednesday.  Please be sure to follow the link over to Peas & Crayons to check out everyone else’s goodies and leave some comments.  There’s always something interesting over there, and I always find new and interesting blogs to read.

Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing my new look with you.   Not the blog…Me!  Got new glasses yesterday (I look Very studious), but I need to do hair and makeup before I do a photo… 😉  Gotta look my best don’t I?!

Happy What I Ate Wednesday!

Old Familiar…

I often bemoan on BCDC the fact that I repeat my foods so often, how boring they seem when I look at the photos and how I should change that.  I could probably save space on my WordPress account by reusing the photos because they look the same.  OK, so I like what I like and I like to repeat.  I’m bored too sometimes, Kids.

All that being said, when I got up bright and early on Wednesday into the crock pot went my bag of pre soaked black beans.  The result…

These beauties!  I’ve said it before, nothing beats the flavor of home cooked beans.  They’re so inexpensive, I think this bag cost $1.29 and so easy now that I know how to do them in the crock pot!  All I have to do is remember to soak them!  I get so many meals out of them, it’s crazy!

Lunch looks pretty familiar over the past couple of weeks…

I am just loving having egg salad ready for a quick lunch.  Ralph loves it in sandwiches and I pair it with my low-fat cottage cheese on top of chopped Romaine lettuce.  I love to liberally sprinkle Mrs. Dash Fiesta Lime seasoning on top. So Tasty!

Something New and Something Old.  The something new is that I’ve finally figured out how to use Skype!  My best friends Gail and Alice have been in Florida since January.  We talk all the time and we’ve done a lot of “talking” about setting up Skype but none of us has actually done it.  I decided on Tuesday that I’d take the plunge.  Alice scared me yesterday morning by suddenly popping up on my screen.  After figuring out a few things, like the fact that I can see her a whole lot better if she turns a light on  (!!) we ended the session with plans to meet up again in the afternoon.

Ta Da!!!  There they are.  We had a wonderful time, laughing hysterically most of the time and having difficulty getting Gail to behave.  She insisted on making faces at me the entire time, much as she does when we’re together in person.  That’s what happens when you’ve know someone since you were six weeks old.  The story our Moms told us was that Gail was born when I was six weeks old.  My Mom took me to visit her Mom.  They put us in the playpen together and the rest is history.   This was great fun and we’ll probably do it every day.

By the time dinner came around, I had no enthusiasm.  However, a girl’s got to eat!  Started with Morningstar Farms Garden Veggie Patties.

Cooked them up in the microwave topped with some shredded cheese on a sandwich thin.

And some reduced calorie Miracle Whip.

Nothing fancy.  I was hungry so I had two and I had enough Points left to do it.  This was very filling and kept me satisfied for the evening with the exception of a Lime Tootsie Pop.  I’ve been in pretty good control all week, which makes me happy.  Hoping for a good result at Weight Watchers on Saturday.

It’s dreary and overcast and looks like it will be rainy today.  I’m not thrilled about that, but what can you do.  I’ve also been awake since 3:30am so it will be fun later trying to stay awake.  I’m not worried.  It’ll all work out.

Happy Thursday!

Big City, Small Town

Ralph and I started out in Philadelphia on Monday.  We had to find an office where he has an appointment this week.  With very little difficulty we found it.  We were told it was directly across the street from the Melrose Diner and that was true!  Made it very easy to find.

The Melrose Diner  ( I forgot to take a photo…) has been in business since 1935 and you can tell it has that old-time diner feel about it.  We decided to sit at the counter and it was a good idea.  We had a very nice server and she gave us a little history of the place.

These paintings are from the original diner and were kept when it was renovated some years ago.

Everyone was extremely friendly.  I went with thoughts of breakfast but ended up with lunch.  I was surprised and happy to see a black bean burger on the menu so I zeroed in on that.

It was big and tasty and I enjoyed it.  I tried for a side salad to replace the fries, but I could only get a vegetable from the day’s selection.  I picked apple sauce and I thought that was a good alternative to the fries.  Their coffee was really good and it was overall a good experience!

It was an incredibly beautiful day.  The temperature was in the 80’s and the humidity low.  Skies were blue and as we drove home Ralph suggested that we take a ride to the Park.

You’ve heard me talk about the Park before.  Red Bank Battlefield lies along the Delaware River and has always been a part of our lives because my sister, Ele and I grew up here.  It is a Revolutionary War battle site and I’ll let the experts tell you the history.  Please read it because it’s a wonderful history.  In October there is a reenactment of the battle.  I’ll hopefully be going this year and I’ll share it with everyone.

A cannon from the fort.

The statue of Colonel Christopher Greene, one of the heroes of the battle.

The plaque explaining the history of the battle.

Two wind-blown tourists!  We walked around the Park for about a half hour and had a great time.

The beautiful, blue sky and the old trees of the Park!

It was a great day and later I had the chance to enjoy it again when Ele called to ask if I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful day and take a walk.  Well, I already did, but I’ll do it again!!  It was very pleasant and I can certainly benefit from the extra exercise.  But don’t you know it, when I got changed I took off my pedometer to find out the battery was dead and I got NO credit for any walking on Monday! 😦  Ah, well…it’s always something…

Tuesday looks pretty sunny so far.  I’m headed over to our storage unit to do some work there.  Still have things to sort out and I hope to get some of it to Goodwill.  I’m trying to get it cleaned out before we leave on our trip.  I don’t want to have to pay for it another month.  Trying to be thrifty!!  We’ll see how it goes!

Happy Tuesday!!

Happy To Be Home Again

My last night in Clearwater found us at the Whistlestop Bar and Grill in Safety Harbor.  This is one of our favorite spots because you can sit outside and they have live music.  Wednesday night was open mic night.  I hate to be harsh but I would have been happier if there had been NO music.  Fortunately…the food was good!

We started out with corn poppers.  They’re tiny little corn fritters…so sweet and tasty.  In an effort to be good, I only ate 3, but they were delicious.

My choice for dinner was a veggie wrap made with their veggie burger, grilled veggies and cheese.  I can’t find it on their menu now but I know I ate it…I have pictures to prove it!!

On the side I got the black-eyed pea salad that I need to duplicate.  It is very tasty, well spiced, but not overly spicy.  Yum.  I hadn’t had this wrap there before and it was very good.  I guess on Wednesday, I was the wrap Queen!! 😉

Fortunately on Thursday morning the skies had cleared and there was no rain.  But there was an accident on the highway that would take us to the Tampa Airport.  We were all up and ready and we were out of the house by 8:45am.  We got to the airport without any issues.

We got there at 9:30 and by 9:40 I was through security!  I was amazed and grateful for that.  I don’t mind sitting there waiting because I can always read, but I hate standing in those lines. Everyone was pleasant which helped enormously! 🙂

Again, another uneventful flight…Thank You, Southwest Airlines…and the flight landed early as their flights always seem to do.  Ralph and I had a little mix up…I had asked him to meet me at departures because at the Philadelphia airport it’s easier for cars to stop.  I had only carry on luggage so that made the most sense.  He ended up at arrivals and there was an accident in his way when he tried to come back around.

I only waited a few minutes longer than I might have so it was not a problem.  Especially because of how beautiful it was when I came out of the building.  Clear skies, and a beautiful, almost cool breeze!  A wonderful welcome home gift.

We got home safely and I unpacked.  I’m so proud of myself because when I came home from Florida in June, my suitcase rode in the car with me until 2 days before I left for Florida again. 😦  What a slug I am sometimes!

After Ralph and I had the chance to chat for a while, I went over to visit my sister, Ele to catch up on the what went on while I was gone.

When I got home, Ralph and I decided we were hungry, but not really hungry.  We were off to the Gateway Diner.  I tried something new this time…an onion omelette.

Of course, I paired it with slice tomatoes and added a sprinkle of black pepper and parmesan cheese.  Just right.  Not too heavy but satisfying.

So here I am at home again with a whirlwind weekend ahead of me.

Tonight is a bridal shower for Ele’s niece.  Tomorrow is our terrific summer tradition, the Rock A Hula party (still have to come up with something to take with me…Yikes!!) and Sunday is the engagement party to go with the bridal shower!!  Holy Cow!!  So we’ll be busy.  I’m hoping to still be able to post so we’ll see how that goes.

AND…tomorrow morning I have Weight Watchers…I’m hoping that vacation didn’t take me TOO far off track.  We’ll see.  I still feel so good about what I’ve accomplished lately that I think I’ll be ok.

Happy Busy Friday!!! 🙂

Tuesday Inside and Out

Ralph and I took a trip to BJ’s Wholesale Club today to pick up a few things.  We were out of Splenda and it is so much less expensive there, especially the BJ’s brand.  I also picked up some popcorn, which helps me stay on track and toothpaste.  I am NOT the one who bought the cherry turnovers…I plead the fifth on who did! 😉

We had lunch at a local diner.  Good spinach salad, but I just wonder why some people cannot act professionally.  Waitresses were shouting back and forth to each other, personal comments that the customers should not have to hear.  The worst thing is that no one in charge made an attempt to stop them.  Very irritating.  I’ll get off of my soapbox before I hurt myself!

After spending several hours at Gail’s, when I got home I wasn’t really hungry yet so I waited a while.  I had not yet tried the edamame burger from The Wishing Well that I had gotten at Natural Harvest Market.  I decided to give it a try.

It was HUGE!! I had been advised to cut it in half and use bread crumbs, so that’s what I did.  I coated a skillet with cooking spray and set it to cooking.  However, it’s very soft and it generally fell apart.  I probably needed a larger skillet and more bread crumbs.  It might have also worked better if I cut it in 4 and then breaded.  Next time I’ll know.

I served it with red bell pepper strips and baby carrots.  I dipped them in the sauce that came with the burger.  Sort of a sour cream, pickle combo. The verdict.  DELICIOUS!!   I don’t usually just cut up veggies to eat along with my other food.  I may start to do that.  I really enjoyed it and the overall meal was very filling.  I didn’t eat another thing except some mandarin oranges.  I think eating late helped too.  Maybe I should consider eating my dinner a little later.  Keeps me from snacking.

An unusual, but beautiful sunset last night.  It almost looked like a sunrise.  Thought I’d share it with you. 🙂

Now it’s Wednesday.  Not sure what the day will hold.  I have fruit to cut up.  Can’t wait to see if I can conquer the mango.  We’ll see it if conquers me! 😉

Happy Wednesday!! 🙂

Sunday On the Run

I did my best to be on track yesterday.  I started with my wonderful combo of Chobani and Fiber One.

I used the vanilla flavor and added cinnamon(!) of course!

It’s only a half cup of Fiber One, but the combo is so filling…and I get 16g of protein from the Chobani and 2 from the Fiber one,  all for only 5 points on Weight Watchers, so it’s a pretty good deal. 🙂

Ele and I snuck off to Barnes and Noble for a quick coffee. I got my non fat, sugar-free cinnamon dolce latte.  I’m not spending 6 points on a frappuchino!  2 points is good.   The cafe was packed!   We settled in front of the magazine racks and I ended up getting sucked into buying the new issue of VegNews.

I still can’t believe that this magazine has been around for years and I’ve only just discovered it.  I really enjoy it though, lots of thought-provoking articles and loads of information!

I spent the afternoon at Gail’s house helping with her Mom.  Even though it’s for a sad reason, I’m enjoying spending so much time with her.  Also glad I can be of help.

Dinner was quick and easy…I was starving!

Salad wit Romaine, red bell pepper, grape tomatoes and MorningStar Farms Grillers California Turk’y burgers. Only 2 points each and very yummy!

Topped with Ken’s Lite Balsamic and Basil Vinaigrette.  I found this recently and thought I’d give it a try.  It’s very tasty and low in points. (I think 1 point per serving…have to recheck.)  Very yummy and satisfying.

Got up early this morning and got my garbanzo beans into the crock pot!

I can smell them cooking as I type!  It will be great to have that supply for the week to keep me going.  It’s such a great idea and I’m so glad I discovered I could cook my beans that way.  I need to stock up on more beans this week since the garbanzos were my last bag.  I’ll see if I can find something different to try!

So now I’m off to Gail’s to help for a few hours.  I’ll have to come back at some point to turn off the beans and drain them (not a responsiblity that I would ask Ralph to tackle…I burn myself often enough doing it, don’t want it to happen to him!)

It’s semi-sunny out at the moment.  Not sure what the weather will hold today.  Not sure what the day in general will hold.  Nevertheless…Happy Monday! 🙂

Disjointed Day

I had a sort of  weird food day yesterday.  Most of the morning involved running errands,  mostly food related.  We went to Walmart to stock up on veggie burgers…Morningstar Farms are the preferred brand.  I got a bunch for myself and for my friend Gail who isn’t able to get out because her Mom is recovering from a hospital stay and needs help most of the time.  Fortunately, we seem to be able to find our favorite chick’n grillers which strangely are not listed on their website.  Take my word for it, they’re delicious!

Went back to my favorite produce place, Verchio’s in Gloucester.  I got this wonderful haul…not as big this time…

Bananas, red bell peppers, Portobellos, spinach and zucchini.  I’m really getting into bananas, I’m not usually a banana fan, but I know they’re good for me, so I’m working on it.

Lunch was just left over ancient bean soup which I’m still working on and still enjoying.  It came to about 7:30pm and I realized I was getting hungry.  I dug into my Morningstar Farms stash and got out the Spicy Black Bean Burgers which are also one of my favorites.

I usually just plop them in the toaster oven and they cook away.  I toasted up some Maier’s Italian Bread

…another new favorite.  I added some cheese just before the burgers were finished.  I didn’t take a photo, I was too hungry by that point!

I ate my dinner while watching Antiques Roadshow which is also one of my favorites.  Gee, sounds like I have a lot of favorites, doesn’t it?! 🙂 Well, it’s true. Then I fell asleep and that’s all she wrote…well, with me, it’s rarely all she wrote!

We’re  expecting a big storm…AGAIN!!! 😦  Funny how that is in the winter.  I personally can’t remember a winter with so much snow, so I suppose we have more of these pictures to look forward to…

Time to get going to a more productive day!
