Another Mall Story

I hate the Mall.  Not just the local Mall that I have to go to if I’m forced, but generally all Malls.  I really think I hate stores in general.  The only exception is any variation of a grocery store.  Those I love!  I think I hate Malls and similar places because of the crowds and the parking and that sort of thing.  It stands to reason then that I especially hate them during the Christmas season.  This is very true.

Obviously, by what I said in yesterday’s post I was excited about the triple crock pot that I found.  There are some good things that come from a visit to a Mall.  I was pleased that the post brought so many comments about that little beauty!  I’m still deciding if it needs to live at my house.  We’ll see.

However, I was completely stumped by one thing that I saw while in the Macy’s store, which is where I found the crock.

A little back ground is in order MANY years ago I worked as a sales associate, then assistant manager for a women’s clothing store called Casual Corner.  I’m not sure if they’re still in business, but I worked there for about 4 years.  I liked it a lot and hated in the same amount.

One of the things I did enjoy was when our display manager, Judy, who handled a number of stores in the New Jersey area, would come to work her magic on our store.  Judy and I had many things in common and I was always happy to see her on our schedule.  Having had costuming experience as a theatre major in college, I was able to help her in some of her work and that was a real treat!  I’m happy to say that Judy and I are still friends to this day.

It is because of her that I had to take the following photo.  I don’t think that big stores much like you to take photos in their establishments.  They probably thought I was a spy from K-Mart or something.  But it was busy enough that no one saw me and I turned off my flash so as not to draw attention to myself.

This is what I saw.

I know it’s the Holidays.  I know they’re very busy, but…I could understand if the shelves were messy as shown by counter below this display, but this display mannequin is ridiculous!  How could anyone in charge of an area allow a display to be presented this way?  You can’t see from the photo, but it was held together by safety pins!!  In my opinion totally unacceptable.

Of course there are many more important things to worry about in the world and again, they’re busy.  I just think that people need to take a little pride in the work that they do especially when it’s in a business such as clothing sales where the look is what brings in money.

I’ll get off my soap box now and get back to real life.  I don’t spend my time at the Mall so I don’t have to be shocked by things like this too often! 😉

Happy Friday!!

  1. No, I get it. It’s what’s wrong with the world today, nobody cares. If we take care with the small things, the big things will take care of themselves…or …the devil is in the details! Go for it, Fran, somebody has to catch them in the act!

  2. fran, i totally love this post as i love malls, and i work in retail, therefore love retail! casual corner was up here in canada, too!! and i have told you i love dressing the mannequins…i would NEVER allow a messy mannequin!! that photo is terrible!!! i do love your secret shopper photo!!
glad to hear you are still friends with judy. isn’t it funny how we just CLICK with some people?!

    • It sure is neat, Cathy that some people are friends from the start (even those we’ve never met in person! 😉 ) It’s funny that Judy and I have just stayed in touch. I truly can’t believe that someone would put up a display like that. If it was against a wall, that would be one thing but in the middle of everything and right in front of the checkout counter. It may be a dumb thing to be appalled by, but I guess Judy just taught me better than that! Have a great day!

  3. Oh my, Casual Corner! I used to shop there back in the day. Yes, I’m that old! You’re awesome!

  4. I hate malls too. Crowds, parking. I’m not a big shopper either. I like to get in and get out!

    • Hi Mare! I’m just don’t like the feeling of the mall. I don’t really have the money to pay for what they’re selling. I only go if I have to have something from a specific store. I don’t have the time to spend just wandering. Extra time that I have, I spend reading!!

  5. That mannequin is just crazy lazy work.
