Happy Month!

I have always been in love with Autumn.  I feel alive and full of potential every year.  I still after all these years feel as though I should start a new project.  I know it probably comes from years of starting school each year.  I still feel the pull of the stationery aisle when I’m in a store.  I need to start something new.

I love October because my birthday is in October.  It has always had a special feeling and as my niece Mary used to say, it’s not your birthDay but your birthMonth!!

Eleven years ago, I started something new, in October that gave me reason to celebrate all month.

Today, October 1, 2011 is Ralph’s and My eleventh anniversary.  As always seems to be the case with Ralph and Me, there’s a funny story.

Ralph and I have been together since 1991.  We talked a lot about getting married, but we just never did anything about it.  During one of our conversations on the subject, Ralph said we’d get married as soon as he found his divorce papers.  Now, those of you who have read BCDC for a while, know that Ralph, although a wonderful man, is not organized.  The chance of him finding those papers ranged between slim and none.  Please take note that I never made the obvious suggestion that we could get a copy from his lawyer.  I’m not pushy…well, at least not most of the time.

One day in late September of 2000, I was looking for something in the basement room that was intended to be an office.  That’s another story altogether!!  I saw a filing cabinet and couldn’t remember what we might have in it.  I start looking through the papers in there and lo and behold I find Ralph’s divorce papers!!

Knowing how urgently he was looking for them 😉  I took them upstairs.  He was in the bathroom when I got up there.  I mentioned to him that I’d found something he was looking for.  He asked what.  I told him I’d show him when he came out.  He said, no, he wanted to know right then and there.  I slid the papers under the door and gave them a push to shoot them across the floor.  There was silence.  I mean DEAD silence.

I went about my business doing whatever I was doing.  He came out of the bathroom clearing his throat and acting surprised at what I’d found.  I just said something to the effect that I knew he was looking for them and thought he’d be glad I found them.

When the shock wore off, he was glad I’d found them.  I knew where my divorce papers were and in the next few days we headed to the borough hall to get a license.  We didn’t realize we needed someone to vouch for us as to our identity but lucky for us, my sister Ele worked across the street.  I grabbed her and she was our witness.

We got the license, we made plans for the wedding to be in my Mom’s dining room and we got the mayor signed up to officiate.  We were only going to have a few people but the crowd grew, especially in Ralph’s family.  When people found out, everyone wanted to be with us.  We got the license on Friday and the wedding was set up for Sunday.

The ceremony.  My sister Ele, Me, Ralph, our son Bill and the Mayor.

With this Ring…

You may kiss the Bride, and he did!!

Me, Ralph, daughter Alice and son Bill.

I was so glad that my two best friends Alice and Gail were here and able to attend.  It made it very special to have them with us.

This is one of my favorite pictures. Ele, Mom and Me.  Mom was very sick at the time and I’m so glad she was able to be there.  I was so glad she got the chance to know Ralph and to know that he would be taking care of me.  I miss her.

This is my favorite photo of Ralph and Me from that day.  Do you think we might have been a little happy in this photo??  I think so.

We’ve been through a lot together and going through the photos from that day, it’s sad to see how many people who were with us that day are no longer with us.  That’s what happens when you look back at old photos.  I’m so happy they were with us that day, it meant a lot to us.

So now we’re on to our twelfth year.  We’re not sure what we’ll do to celebrate.  We have a bottle of wine chilling and that may be the extent of our celebration.  It really doesn’t matter as long as we’re together.

Happy Autumn!!  Happy October!!  Happy Anniversary!!

Oh – and when I started reading none of the pics were visible. I was about to demand that you email them to me (1st time I’d seen them – how’d that happen?) when I suddenly realized I was reading on Yahoo. I switched over to the blog itself and there they were. And lovely
