Whole Lot Of Shakin’ Goin’ On!!

But first to introduce the day….It’s What I Ate Wednesday!!

Peas and Crayons

I didn’t forget this time and in spite of yesterday’s weirdness.  I’m prepared!

I was out early Tuesday morning.  Off to the storage unit and so proud of myself for getting there early.  I had to wait until 9am because I’m still having the issue with the door and the manager has to get me in and out.  He’s been very cooperative about it and I appreciate that.

I weeded through a lot of stuff, made some trash, made some Goodwill bags and loaded the car to bring stuff home.  I was very proud of myself and I’ll be there again over the next few days to get it all out of there.  Thank goodness there’s not more there…I’d be in trouble trying to accomplish this feat of strength!!

When I got home I was very hungry and fortunately I had overnight oats (OOIAJ) ready and waiting!

Sadly, the few strawberries I had left were all funky so I only had blueberries, but they were just yummy!  I guess I never have to worry about Ralph stealing my OOIAJ.  He told me he looked over at it and it made him quesy…hmmmm…kind of how I feel about your steak sometimes, dear.

Anyway, we had some banking to do and our plan was bank, then lunch, then Verchio’s to pick up some produce.  The bank went well.  We decided on Subway.  We both like it there, we can both get what we want and it was on our route.

I got my usual favorite, the Veggie Delite!  Provolone cheese, spinach,  tomatoes, red onion, sweet peppers, green peppers, lots o’ black olives and the Southwest Chipotle sauce.  Very tasty.

As we’re sitting there eating, Ralph started to kick the table…or so I thought.  We’ve discussed it since then and this is how it went.  I say, “Honey, why are your kicking the…oh, you’re not kicking the table!!”  That because I suddenly realized that it wasn’t the table that was shaking…it was my chair.  After it started, it paused then went on, twice.  It was the strangest sensation.

Ralph and  I both remember an earthquake in this area, probably 30 some years ago.  I was in college up late studying and there was no one with me to ask, “Hey, what was that?”  That one I heard, too.  It sounded like a train.  This was much more of a feeling sensation, I think because it went on for so long.  Probably only about 20 seconds, but it “felt” like it went on for a long time.

As we left Subway, we tried to call my sister, Ele to see if she was ok and she had gone to the storage place to see if I was ok!  When she saw my car wasn’t at my house she thought something might have fallen on me at the storage unit!!  Of course I found this out later because all of the circuits were busy and all I knew was that she had gone to the storage unit!  What a crazy day!!

Everyone was ok and that’s what was important. I went over to her house and we watched the earthquake coverage on TV for a while.  We always worry about our cousins who live in California and the earthquakes there.  This time, they were contacting us on Facebook to make sure we were ok.  Quite a turn around.

I finally did get to dinner.  Ralph and I both opted for salads.  I make him the kind he likes with tuna and I set about to make what is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

A fresh pot of quinoa cooked up in veggie broth.

Romaine, Jersey tomato and green bell pepper.

My last cup of pinto beans… 😦

Quinoa and pinto beans added

The finished, yummy product!!  I’m not too sad about the end of the pinto beans because I remembered to soak some black beans last night and they are now happily crocking away in my crock pot!!

So that’s my story for What I Ate Wednesday with a little earthquake stuff thrown in for good measure.  All in All a very interesting day!

Today might be interesting, too.  We’ll See!!

Happy Wednesday!!

Big City, Small Town

Ralph and I started out in Philadelphia on Monday.  We had to find an office where he has an appointment this week.  With very little difficulty we found it.  We were told it was directly across the street from the Melrose Diner and that was true!  Made it very easy to find.

The Melrose Diner  ( I forgot to take a photo…) has been in business since 1935 and you can tell it has that old-time diner feel about it.  We decided to sit at the counter and it was a good idea.  We had a very nice server and she gave us a little history of the place.

These paintings are from the original diner and were kept when it was renovated some years ago.

Everyone was extremely friendly.  I went with thoughts of breakfast but ended up with lunch.  I was surprised and happy to see a black bean burger on the menu so I zeroed in on that.

It was big and tasty and I enjoyed it.  I tried for a side salad to replace the fries, but I could only get a vegetable from the day’s selection.  I picked apple sauce and I thought that was a good alternative to the fries.  Their coffee was really good and it was overall a good experience!

It was an incredibly beautiful day.  The temperature was in the 80’s and the humidity low.  Skies were blue and as we drove home Ralph suggested that we take a ride to the Park.

You’ve heard me talk about the Park before.  Red Bank Battlefield lies along the Delaware River and has always been a part of our lives because my sister, Ele and I grew up here.  It is a Revolutionary War battle site and I’ll let the experts tell you the history.  Please read it because it’s a wonderful history.  In October there is a reenactment of the battle.  I’ll hopefully be going this year and I’ll share it with everyone.

A cannon from the fort.

The statue of Colonel Christopher Greene, one of the heroes of the battle.

The plaque explaining the history of the battle.

Two wind-blown tourists!  We walked around the Park for about a half hour and had a great time.

The beautiful, blue sky and the old trees of the Park!

It was a great day and later I had the chance to enjoy it again when Ele called to ask if I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful day and take a walk.  Well, I already did, but I’ll do it again!!  It was very pleasant and I can certainly benefit from the extra exercise.  But don’t you know it, when I got changed I took off my pedometer to find out the battery was dead and I got NO credit for any walking on Monday! 😦  Ah, well…it’s always something…

Tuesday looks pretty sunny so far.  I’m headed over to our storage unit to do some work there.  Still have things to sort out and I hope to get some of it to Goodwill.  I’m trying to get it cleaned out before we leave on our trip.  I don’t want to have to pay for it another month.  Trying to be thrifty!!  We’ll see how it goes!

Happy Tuesday!!

The Best Laid Plans…The Slug Still Lives

I had lots of things I wanted to work on Sunday, but that never seemed to happen.  I’m just going through a stage.  The Slug Still Lives.

My sister, Ele texted me early to ask if I wanted to have a K-Mart adventure with her.  I figured, why not.  I could already tell I wasn’t motivated to do what I had planned to do.

I picked her up after she finished church and we were off to K-Mart.  There were sneakers on sale and she wanted to take advantage.  Not only were sneakers on sale, they were having a buy one get one 50% off even on clearance items.  I was in love!

Ele didn’t want a second pair and said if I found something I wanted, I could be her second pair…well, my sneakers could be her second pair!!

What do you think?!?  Red, white and black plaid sneakers with double laces, so cool.  Why am I obsessed lately with odd sneakers?  The best thing is…they were on sale for $7.99 so with 50% off…they were $4.00!!  I’m so excited!  They’ll actually be perfect for our trip.  I’ll fit right in when we get to Silver City!  The hippies will Love me!!

We decided we’d stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for a treat.  (Where’s my boyfriend, Captain America…:-(  )Mine was a small iced coffee which I was happy about.  Staying on track is my life’s work!

Now, Ms. Ele…

Caught in the act with her caramel machhiato with the whipped cream!!  She has her nerve dipping the ole finger in there!  Lucky for me I don’t like whipped cream so I wasn’t tempted.  We chatted for a while and it was fun!  Regular readers will realize that we always sit at the same table.  We have our rules.  There were people there when we came in, but we dawdled and they left!

I started reading Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen: Book Cover

Many times, I’m reluctant to read a book that has so much acclaim.  I tend to drag my feet about it.  The reason is, I’ve been so disappointed in the past by books that have been “must reads.”  I’m happy to say that so far this is good.  Well written, descriptive, not too wordy and the story is moving along quickly.  The best part is, this is one of the books I bought while I was in Clearwater on the Great Thrift Store Tour.  My price…49 cents!!!  It’s in good condition (which doesn’t always happen at thrift stores) so I’m excited.  It kept me peddling away on my stationary bike this morning! 😉

Dinner was catch as catch can and will look familiar to you except for one addition.

I got this wonderful artisan lettuce at Aldi’s for only $1.99!  I was so shocked when I found it.  Ralph had paid almost $8.00 for a container like this earlier in the summer.

It was a colorful and tasty addition to my salad.

A Jersey tomato, red bell pepper and the last of my romaine.  Also added were a cup of my pinto beans (almost gone) and the last of my quinoa. 😦

Yummy salad with a trick I learned last Saturday…how to change my camera setting to do close-ups.  I think I like it!

Ralph and I are off on an adventure today to find an office where he has an appointment later in the week.  I’ve been told there will be breakfast involved at a rather famous Philadelphia food spot.  I’ve got my camera and I can do close-ups now!  I think it will be fun.

Happy Monday!!

Saturday Slug

I had all sorts of plans for constructive things I needed to do on Saturday.  My most constructive thing, I suppose was making it to Weight Watchers on time and losing three-quarters of a pound!

I think we all go through phases like that and I have certainly been in one for the last few days.  I’ve got to get my head wrapped around all the things I need to accomplish.  Sunday will be the day I get myself back on track.  No Excuses!!

Ralph and I got hungry around 1pm and we decided close and easy were our words for lunch.  We drove (we should have walked, it’s only 2 blocks away!!) to Picasso’s Pizza.  I realize as I write BCDC, that I tend to be a very boring eater.  I very often eat the same things at the same places, but I’m so happy when I go somewhere and there’s something that I can eat (vegetarian), can count (Weight Watchers) and like!!

My favorite at Picasso’s is their pepper and egg sandwich.

With American cheese added…it’s just the Best!  I always burn my mouth because I can’t wait!  😉  Ralph had a sausage, pepper and onion sandwich and he thought it was great.  We have both decided that one of the reasons their sandwiches are so good is because of the rolls.  Not sure where they get them, but they are always fresh and delicious.  Definitely worth the trip…yeah…the 2 block trip.  But even if it’s only 2 blocks, if it’s not good it’s not good.  This is great!

As we walked to the car, Ralph said the 3 words that always win my heart…no, not I Love You…Ice Cream Kids!!

I was disappointed when it came time to order…there was no butter almond left and then I found out that Ralph might have been the culprit.  The young man behind the counter was great.  He said, “oh, no…I think I served someone the last of it yesterday.”  Almost with a wink to Ralph.  The kids who work there are just the best!

My combo of coffee and rum raisin…very yummy…

MY Ice Cream Kid!!  He’s too funny.

We came home and just slugged away the day.  I slugged away at the book I’m reading and the Phillies slugged away at the Nationals.  I still can’t believe after all these years, Gail has turned me into a Phillies fan.  It’s fun and I’m enjoying it!

One last photo of a chubby bunny who greeted us in the yard when we came home.

I tried to wait for him/her to turn around so I could get a better photo, but he/she would not.  We love all of the cool critters: squirrels, chipmunks, birds (including a hawk!) that like to live in our yard.  Wonder what kinds of critters, I’ll find in New Mexico?  We’ll see!

Off to attempt to have a productive day.

Happy Sunday!! 🙂

Challenges Can’t Get Me Down

I’ve been doing this Weight Watchers thing for a long time.  A long time ago, I remember my leader, MaryLou giving us a wonderful way to look at challenges.  She said “View every challenge as an opportunity to succeed.”  I think that should have been my motivation for last weekend.

I was worried heading to WW this morning because of all the challenges last weekend…bridal shower, Rock A Hula party, engagement party.  Well they were a challenge to be sure.  I did my best, lived through it and today at WW I had a three-quarter of a pound weight loss!! 🙂  Am I happy?  You Bet I Am!!

I did my best to journal all of my food over the weekend.  I journaled all of my foods during the week.  I think I’ve proven to myself that I can face these challenges. I feel that this was a successful week.

Friday I was a little sluggish.  I felt that way on Thursday, too.  I don’t know why.  I didn’t accomplish much.  I’ve got to get myself motivated to do what I need to do to prepare for our upcoming trip.  Lots to do and lots to look forward to.  More on that over the next couple of weeks.

Friday was a good food day.  I hadn’t made overnight oats so I went with what I had.

I started with a cup of Fiber One, added a cup of Aldi’s Light & Fit fat-free vanilla yogurt.  It’s so tasty and so inexpensive!  Added yummy blueberries and strawberries.

So good and so filling.

Ralph was out for dinner so I got to just take care of Me.

Started with my typical salad of romaine, Jersey tomato and red bell pepper.  Boring, but I like it!

Added 1 cup of my home-made pinto beans…I’m loving them!!

Took a cup of the quinoa I had made earlier in the week…such a good idea to make extra…just like with the beans.  I added garlic powder, ground black pepper and dried basil.  Microwaved for about 45 seconds to warm it up.  Then added to the salad.  Topped with balsamic vinaigrette.

By the looks of this salad, even my Big Purple Bowl can’t contain it!!  I’m not going to get a bigger bowl…just kidding!  The great thing about this is, most of what’s in the bowl doesn’t count on WW (the veggies) and I’m getting lots of protein (beans and quinoa) which I need.  It’s a great way to fill myself up and stay on track.  And it’s good for me!!

Saturday has started out positive and I hope it will stay that way.  I’ve got to get myself up and doing things.  I’m proud of this week.  Just remember…View Every Challenge As An Opportunity To Succeed.

Happy Saturday!!

BTMH Thursday

Ralph and I were both up early Thursday morning to get ready to go to a funeral.  Funerals are sad and this was no different except that it celebrated a wonderful long life.  Of course, as we left our house, the skies opened up again and we were drenched just getting to the car.

Ralph’s friend, Bob from his days in the detective bureau had always treated us as part of the family.  Because of that we got to be very close with his parents.  When we would go to their parties, Bob’s parents would always grab Ralph and Me to sit with them.  It was always a good idea.  They were both wonderful, gregarious people and I loved listening to their stories.  His Dad passed away a few years back and we were so sorry to hear of his Mom’s passing this weekend.  She was 96 years old and she will be missed.  I feel that it was such a privilege to know Her and Her Husband.  They were the best.

Ralph and I had previous plans to meet his sisters and cousins to celebrate his cousin, Kathie’s birthday.  When we left the visitation, it was too early to go to the restaurant and we didn’t think we could wait for something to eat.  We thought we’d stop at the Gateway Diner for some coffee and a quick snack.

We each had a bagel that definitely qualifies for BTMH (Bigger Than My Head) and cream cheese.  A bit pricey (Point wise) for a Thursday, but I didn’t want a full breakfast.  With coffee, it hit the spot.  Next time, I think I’ll choose an English muffin!

We made a quick trip home because we were still too early.  Lunch was planned at the Adelphia Restaurant for 12:30pm.  As I’ve mentioned before, I have a sort of love/hate relationship with this place.  It moved to the love side yesterday.

Unfortunately, this is not on their regular menu, just the lunch menu.  I think I’ll whine the next time I go to see if I can get it again.  It was a caprese salad.

It was so big…second contender for BTMH today!!  Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, fresh parsley, fresh mozzarella cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.  It was so good, I almost licked my plate!  Tough trying to figure the Points on this, but I did my best! 😉

Kathie with her Birthday cake!

My slice…again BTMH

But I only ate this much.  Again, how do I count this?!?

The whole gang- George, Me, Kathy, Ralph, John, Maddie, Kathie-the Birthday Girl and Lynne.

Ralph and I were both full and didn’t even think about regular dinner.  Lucky for me, I had made overnight oats but didn’t have time to eat them in the AM.

Perfect for a light dinner!!  I love it!!

Something legitimately Bigger Than My Head…Kathie’s Happy Birthday balloons.

All in all a good day.  No clue what’s up for today.  Time will tell…

Happy Friday!!

Just In Time

Sometimes I’m a little late to the party.   Yesterday I was just in time.

For several months, I’ve been reading about What I Ate Wednesday sponsored by Peas & Crayons. I never participated because I never bothered to read the rules.  I had already posted yesterday (with a really good food day) when I read the rules and realized that the food I posted didn’t have to be From a Wednesday, just posted On a Wednesday.  So I joined in!!

Peas and Crayons

I’m so glad I did!  It was fun and I enjoyed reading what all of the other bloggers were up to.  I didn’t get through all of them, so I have more to look forward to today.  I like the idea, it helps us feel that we’re part of something and not just posting out into the abyss.  I also noticed people coming to BCDC from Peas & Crayons.  We’re all in this together and it’s great fun!

Wednesday sort of slipped by. The only meal I documented was my dinner.  I was on track, having my overnight oats in the morning…I do love them!  Blueberries and strawberries made them special.

Dinner…which I again had late to try to keep myself from snacking.  That seems to be working for me.  On to the Salad!!

Lots of chopped romaine

Red bell pepper

Is there anything more beautiful than the inside of a ripe Jersey tomato?

I remembered there was still some pasta salad left over from Saturday’s party so I added that.

One luscious cup of protein…my lovely pinto beans.  With some balsamic vinaigrette added, it was the perfect meal.  Good thing my Purple Bowl is so Big…that’s a darned big salad I’ve got there.  Sometimes they feel like I’ll never finish them, but I always do.  It’s such a healthy and filling thing to have for dinner.  And there are so many variations I can make.  I love it!

I’m up early today.  Sadly, we have a funeral to go to this morning.  Then we have a birthday lunch to go to after.  I’m off to get myself ready.

Happy Thursday…
