I Dream Of Junkin’

One of the things that Gail, Alice and I like best is what we refer to as “Junkin’.”  When we’re in Florida, we’re in Hog Heaven!  It’s hard to go more than a few blocks without running into a thrift store.  Believe me, we take full advantage of the opportunity! 😉

Thursday was ear marked as a “junkin'” day.  I’m sure there will be other stops while I’m here, but this was the big day.  All junkin’ all the time!  I wouldn’t say no!!

Here is our favorite…

The Last Chance Thrift Store.  It is run by the Vietnam Veterans so I’m rather partial to it considering I have one of them (a Vietnam veteran ) back at home.  Ralph of course!  I got him some great shirts here during my visit in June and I got two more great shirts for him on Thursday.

We’ll be going back to Last Chance again before I leave because of 50% off coupons we got from a local newspaper.  Stand back, Last Chance, here we come!! 😉

During our long day, of course we needed fortification.  Since it was close to one of the shops we needed to visit, we stopped at Tijuana Flats!!  I didn’t think I’d have a chance to eat there again so soon, but I wouldn’t complain.  Only made good sense with an eye toward saving gas, eat close to the last stop on our tour!

My excellent lunch…

It’s just called a Fresh Salad.  Served in a crispy whole wheat tortilla with fresh greens, cheese and my choice of filling.  I chose black beans.  It came with sour cream and guacamole.  I asked the server if the avocado ranch dressing was good.  She told me it was the most popular so I gave it a try.  The whole thing was so good, once again!  I know I shouldn’t have eaten something like that because I have to weigh in at Weight Watchers on Saturday, but I won’t have another chance to try it.  I had no clue how to count the Points value, but…my thought is, I can figure it out approximately and as long as I track it I’ll be ok!  Whatever the Points value…it was worth it!! 🙂  I did NOT eat the whole shell, just a few tastes.

I thought I’d share with you some of my treasures from yesterday’s excursion.

I got 4 of these adorable bowls, green on the bottom, pink inside.  They’re good for side dishes…59 cents each!

This is a little container for tea.  Ralph’s always asking me…”Where are the tea bags?”  Now he’ll know!

I LOVE this mug!!  I love the attitude and it’s a nice sturdy mug.  $1.79!!

I know, I know…I just got rid of close to 200 books.  But they are so inexpensive and I’m really excited about Water For Elephants and Love In the Time of Cholera.  Vegan Freak looks pretty interesting too and again, that and the Super Foods book count as research for BCDC!!! 😉

Overall it was a great day of junkin’.  Dinner time found us at The Galley.

We’ve been there before and it’s good.  It’s one of the places where I had the Greek salad with the potato salad on my trip here in June.  I wanted to try to keep it simple and I just had a Caesar salad with the dressing on the side.

It was good and with the dressing on the side, it wasn’t too bad on the Points value.  I really have been missing my big salads on this trip so I’m hoping to get some more salads in over the next few days.

I’m not sure what Friday holds for us.  We’ve been trying to have a picnic on the beach at sunset, but the weather has not cooperated.  That’s our plan for this evening, but the weather may still not be on our side.  The rest of the day is wide open.  We’ll see what happens!

Happy Friday!! 🙂

  1. I love thrift shops! I swear, half of my home decor comes from junk shops. You scored some really good books! Water for Elephants is one of my all-time favourites. Are you considering experimenting with vegetarianism or veganism? Or just reading for interest’s sake?

    • Stephanie, I’ve been a vegetarian for about 20 years. I keep toying with the idea of becoming vegan, but I have a problem that I love cheese so much, the thought of giving that up is difficult. I keep researching it. We’ll see what happens.

  2. Ummmmmmm, Water for Elephants and Love in the Time of Cholera were two of my favorite books this year!!! Water for Elephants… I am such a sap about. I 100% approve.
